Painting Over Pine Furniture

Dip your brush into the shellac to coat it then tap it against the side of the can. Then prime your furniture with a stain-resistant primer. The paint is so good that you cannot stuff it up.
Then take some sandpaper to the edges corners and handles to sand off some of the paint to expose the natural wood underneath. The latex versions do not work as well if you are going to paint over a dark stain. Coat the entire wood in a thin but consistent layer.
After painting numerous furniture pieces I have found some time-saving tricks and also learned from mistakes along the way. If any spots created lines or dips I just sanded those down to smooth then went over them on my next coat. If your pine is finished with a dark stain applying a light or white paint to the finish will completely transform the piece.
